Resumo: The present dissertation aims to discuss the three Unions of Professionals of Education within of Rio de Janeiro: SINPRO-Rio, UPPES and SEPE-RJ. This analysis seeks to identify divergences and convergences between the referred unions as far as two main aspects are concerned, namely, their pedagogical orientation and their main routing project. Our position is that the pedagogical orientation should comprise a specific conception of education and society and the union s routing project should contain its core conception, its organizational structure and the political practice of each entity. As a means to reach that goal, the thesis starts by analyzing education and its relation to the material base of society, that means, the relation to the superstructural phenomenon, seeking to understand the transformations in the nature of the work of professionals of education under the patterns of flexible accumulation and seeking to understand, under this perspective, specificities of those unions. In fact, the form of comprehension of school, the nature of the educator s work, of the Union- mode in general and the history of those three unions in particular has enabled us to accomplish an analysis of the empirical object and identify to what extent those unions do defend the historical interests of the working class which they formally represent.
