Resumo: This research deals with the leadership for the building up and the development of high performance teams in order to face the actual society challenges and the complexity of oil industry business environment. Based on literature, it was adopted the assumption that leadership has a fundamental role in the development and maintenance of high performance teams, in order to reach organizational objectives, keeping these teams motivated for always overcome the challenges and innovation. Studying the case of a petroleum refinery in Brazil presenting a very good and sustainable results for more than a decade, interviewing leaders and followers who work or worked for building up a leadership culture that seeks for high performance, and collecting documented evidences, it was identified practices and procedures that confirm the adopted premise. This study disclose that a committed leadership with the organization, having personnel as his working focus to achieve the company objectives, respecting personnel as human being, who have their own objectives and necessities, it is possible to form high performance teams reaching the expect outcomes and even overcoming them, with a sustainable way either to organization and for personnel.
