Resumo: This research studies the prevention of avoidable accidents through voluntary tools implemented by organizations. By means of an ex-post-facto study, it confirms the positive impact achieved by a Work-Related Injury Prevention Program (IPP), implemented through systematic approach in an oilfield services company. The text describes the way in which the different elements of the Occupational Health and Security Management System (OHSMS) model were used by the company to decrease the number of accidents related to stepping, handling, and lifting. The investigated aspects include, firstly, how the implementation of IPP allowed a significant statistical decrease in the frequency and severity coefficients of work related accidents, and secondly, if it is possible to identify differentiating elements in this IPP, in comparison to other models in the researched literature that were considered effective by their respective authors. The IPP program was developed through training modules, designed with the intention of orienting the employees as to the identification and reduction of the risks found in the daily working environment, and the learning of basic notions of the anatomy and physiology of bodily protection. This was complemented by practical training, in order to fixate theoretical knowledge and to verify the infrastructure and organization of the workplace. By using a systematic approach and incorporating elements of the OHSMS, the IPP was successful in reinforcing the security culture, increasing the number of standard deviation reports per employee, thus resulting in a statistically significant decrease in both the frequency and severity coefficients of work-related accidents.
