Resumo: | Located in the north of Rio de Janeiro State, Atafona is a small coastal vacation town frequented by traditional families from Campos dos Goytacazes and São João da Barra. Every year, one week after Easter, its largest religious and popular festival takes place, Penha´s Festival, a celebration in honour of Nossa Senhora da Penha (Our Lady of the Bluff), the patroness of Atafona. Taking Penha´s Festival for a special lócus of analysis, we intend to discuss how local population and vacationers from both São João da Barra and Campos dos Goytacazes represent themselves and relate to one another on such an extraordinary occasion of social life. Through this "situational analysis", we aim to reach some clear understanding of social relationships in the town in their totality. In addition to that, we analyse how the forms of sociability of the vacationers from Campos dos Goytacazes in Atafona give members of the group status. Over the last decades, Atafona has been going through a process of changes regarding its lifestyle and the kind of visitors it receives. We discuss this process taking into account, among other things, the social and economic crisis vacationers from Campos dos Goytacazes are being affected by and the sea level rise in Atafona area, which has destroyed fourteen blocks so far |
