Resumo: Reading has a crucial role in the process of foreign language and learning. This work focuses on the importance given to reading skills in materials for Spanish self-directed learning, based on the premise that this skill sho uld not be given a minor position in relation to the other foreign language abilities as it is part of the meaning construction processes. The investigations took place by analyzing two sets of magazines for Spanish self-directed learning. The main objective of this research was to analyze the perception of reading in these materials through the exercises proposed for the given texts, which strategies were proposed for the learners. The analysis of the material shows that reading is not yet seen as a reader-text interaction process, as a result of interactional procedures, but as a mechanical form-focused practice, reducing learning to read to linguistic sign memorizations, centered on the uniqueness of language, nevertheless the materials present reading in different manners
