The aim of this work is to offer suggestions in order to widen the capacity of perception of the Brazilian Network of Legal Metrology and Quality - Inmetro (RBMLQ-I) in relation to surveillance of the quality of the products in the brazilian market under the responsibility of this network. In order to make clear the role of Inmetro as coordinator of this network it is described the management model of the Sistema Brasileiro de Avaliação da Conformidade - SBAC (Brazilian Conformity Assessment System) and its Executive Committee, the CBAC (Comitê Brasileiro de Avaliação da Conformidade - Brazilian Conformity assessment Committee) of which Inmetro is the executive Secretary. The study of the two kinds of market surveillance: quality survey and Conformity Verification, is preceded by an historic review that starts with the metrological survey in some eastern european countries in the 17th century and in Brazil. The development of the metrological survey during the colony, empire and republican periods is shown until when the focus turns to quality. A generic and short approach of the system of the United States and then suggestions are made in order to widen the capacity of perception of The Brazilian Network of Legal Metrology and Quality-Inmetro (RBMLQ-I) within the scope of conformity assessment
