Resumo: The purpose of this Master s dissertation is to verify the approach given to linguistic differences in mother tongue teaching. Although it is believed the role of school is to teach the linguistic norm of prestige, it does not mean denying other functional languages, for instance, the language students use within their family or social group to which they belong. The reflections were based upon Eugenio Coseriu s theory and postulates. Coseriu s trichotomy - system, linguistic norm and speech - was the starting point to deepening the knowledge of linguistic norm and correctness. It was observed that in current literature the term linguistic norm is polysemic. Therefore there is no consensus among linguists on the subject, as reflected in official documents, such as the Brazilian National Curriculum Parameters for Portuguese Language (PCN, in Portuguese); and in textbooks. It was aimed identifying in the PCN guidelines for working with linguistic variation, once they are supposed to provide directions for mother tongue teaching. In addition, Portuguese language textbooks were evaluated due to the importance of this didactic tool to teaching. In textbooks were analyzed the proposed activities for linguistic variation and their conformity or non conformity with the PCN s guidelines. Finally, it was considered relevant the study of the descriptors of the so-called Prova Brasil (a Brazilian national evaluation exam), concerning linguistic variation, as well as the items related to these descriptors, in order to identify how an evaluation prepared by official government agencies approach the issue of variation. Thus, it was possible to evaluate how close we are to linguistic guidelines wich consider the differences and combat linguistic prejudice and how far we are from achieving this goal.
