Resumo: This dissertation concerns questions related to the management of conveyor belt waste at large-scale mining operations. The socioeconomic importance of mining as a driving force and transformational agent in environmental issues is presented. The study analyzes difficulties in managing this waste, and its characteristics and risks at large operations. The importance of conveyor belt transportation systems within the production process and the application of integrated management systems are examined. A review of the literature is presented with respect to different management systems, their main characteristics, the importance of identifying existing risks to process safety, and the application of management systems combined with other management factors. Descriptive and exploratory methods were used as strategies in this study, based on case studies of two operations at the same large company, which both use conveyor belts to transport iron ore, but involving different processes. Finally, guidelines are proposed for managing rubber waste arising from the iron ore transportation process, based on theoretical references, which could help mining companies to manage their industrial waste more efficiently.
