Resumo: | This study investigates how the occupational environment of a pediatric ward is experienced by health professionals and to what extent it affects their well-being and overall health. Over the last decades, health care work has undergone a dramatic transformation and these changes have negatively affected the physical and mental health of health care professionals. Using a qualitative framework, this research aimed at identifying health threats and potential triggers of burnout in occupational environment. Qualitative methods -participant observation, interviews and field notes- were used to validate responses on quantitative instruments - sociodemographic questionnaire and MBI, which was used to assess the dimensions of burnout. Data analysis was grounded on interpretation of meaning methodology. The results indicated low risk for burnout, which may be due to the positive aspects in the working environment of the pediatric ward of the academic hospital. Although not-conflict-free, overall positive relationships, marked by trust and cooperation, seem to have contributed to the satisfactory balance found between work environment and workers’ health. To this it should be added the social acknowledgment of the work and value of health care professionals, together with their sense of self-accomplishment in caring for children. Although they have to face the consequences of underfunding and low governance standards, health professionals maintain a positive view of their work while effectively responding to the daily challenges they face, thus keeping a good balance between work and occupational health. |
