Resumo: | This work investigated how adolescents perceive the role of the cell phone in their relationship with friends. Twenty adolescents (ten males and ten females) with ages ranging from 14 to 17 years old participated in this investigation. Data were collected using questionnaires and interviews about how adolescents use cell phones, as well as about the influence perceived of cell phone on their friendships, regarding some specific dimensions. Regarding the use of cell phones, a general profile was designed for the group, and genders have been compared. The aspects investigated and results obtained were the following: 1) Friends Network: there was a variation in the number and composition of the network, however participants pointed primordially changes in existing relationships; 2) Shared Activities (the cell phone influenced specially the planning of shared activities allowing a larger coordination of friends) and Communication (content related to planning and a higher intensity of communication); 3) Quality, Satisfaction and Commitment: the cell phone seems to affect friendship quality positively, creating the sensation of satisfaction and increasing the commitment with the relationship; 4) Intimacy and Closeness: the cell phone increases closeness with friends. Two aspects that appeared during the investigation were confidence (especially in the communication means) and new possibilities of social support. The relationship between the use of cell phones, as a technological form, and friendships in adolescence are discussed according to Robert Hinde s perspective. This way, dialectical relationships between the social-cultural environment (technology) which affects the physical environment (the cell phone itself) and personal relationships are proposed. By its turn, the use of cell phones between friends affects the development of information technology. |
