Resumo: AIM: to assess the influence of previous use and opening of bottles on bond strength of dentin adhesive systems [Prime & Bond 2.1 (PB2.1), acetone solvent; and Adper™ Single Bond 2 (SB2), alcohol/water solvent]. MATERIAL AND METHODS: sixteen sound human molars were used and distributed into six groups, according to type of material and opening time, whose dentins were prepared in order to receive adhesive systems and composite resin. Fresh bottles of the materials were used for the control groups (PBC and SBC). The PB24h and SB24h groups had their bottles kept opened for 24 hours. The PBS and SBS groups had their use simulated and then the bottles were kept opened for 24 hours. The specimens were subjected to microtensile bond strength (µTBS) (0,5 mm/min) and the data (MPa ± SD) were treated with the Shapiro-Wilk, ANOVA and Duncan (α=0.05) statistical tests. RESULTS: the PBC group (26.25 ± 3.69) showed statistically significant difference when compared with PB24h (19.21 ± 7.65) and PBS (20.79 ± 6.66) groups, which were similar. There were no statistically significant difference between the SBC (30.05 ± 14.12), SB24h (32.27 ± 7.48) e SBS (30.14 ± 6.06) groups. The PB24h and PBS groups showed the lowest bond strength values among the all groups tested. CONCLUSION: the previous use of one acetone-based adhesive system, as well as keeping its bottle opened influence directly on dentin bond strength. However, there was no influence when the adhesive system is based on water/ethanol.
