Resumo: The first decade of the 21st century had as a focal point the intense debate on violence against women and, therefore, the Brazilian civil society began to pay more attention on this matter and in the reality of the issue. The perspective of the research on violence was focused on the concept of gender, showing that the number of women killing on the state of Espírito Santo was higher than other states of the Union. Its capital, the city of Vitória, was the most lethal city for women among the other capitals of the Brazilian’s states. Despite the fact that in the 2000s Brazil had an increase of legislations and State’s policies aimed to eradicate violence against women, the femicides rates in the city of Vitória had an average annual growth. This doctoral thesis proposes a study on violence against women, mostly on the femicide phenomenon, in the years between 2002 and 2015 in the city of VitóriaES. It’s our aim to analyze the influence of patriarchy that isstill present in Brazilian society and in the state of Espírito Santo. The influence of patriarchy is the focal point of the cases of lethal and non-lethal violence analyzed by this research. Therefore, it uses criminal processes that were registered and judged between the years 2007 and 2015 as its main documented source. This allows investigating the influence of representations based on patriarchy in cases where partners or former partners ended the life of their partners or spouses. As a secondary documented source, and in order to complement this study by exploring the cycle of violence against women, we also use the Police Reports of the Police Specialized Department in Assistance to Women in the city of Vitória, registered between 2002 and 2010.
