Resumo: | In face of the process of transformations experienced in the social organization of Gypsy groups in the state of Espírito Santo, this study aims to understand what the school means for the adult Gypsies of Camp Sol. For a long time the Gypsies did not go to school. Access and permanence were hampered by factors such as nomadism, lack of places to camp, frequent expulsion, discrimination in relation to how they enter the world of labor, marriage in adolescence with disruption of studies, among others. Recently, some transformations are triggering new forms of relationship between them and the school. In this context, several questions emerged, among them: what is the meaning of school for Gypsies? Do adult Gypsies want to study and / or continue their studies? What kind of school education do they want? The research was developed at Camp Sol, located in the municipality of Fundão, in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. For the foundation of the reflections, we searched for a foundation in the studies about culture and identity, having as reference, authors like Clifford Geertz, Fredrik Barth, Carlos Rodrigues Brandão, Roque de Barros Laraia and others. The methodology used was ethnographic research, and the record of the observations and dialogues maintained with the study subjects was made through field diary, maintained from April 2014 to May 2017; photographic record was used in some occasions. The study pointed out that the adult Gypsies of Sun Camp want to study. It indicated that they are redefining important cultural elements and, in this process, incorporating the school institution into their social organization. Their narratives point out that for them, the school has contradictory meanings, whether good or bad, being "the end of the gypsy" or a light in its path. It is concluded that the gypsies investigated are modifying the way of relation with the school institution through relaxation in the border areas. |
