This study aims to investigate the prison labor, based on the extramural labor reality experienced by individuals in deprivation of liberty, selected to work at the Federal University of Espírito Santo through agreements signed between UFES and the State Department of Justice, the Court of Justice of the State of Espírito Santo and the National Council of Justice, in the period 2017-2021 in a context of fiscal austerity, successive budget cuts in funding for education and the maintenance of educational institutions. This study also seeks to contribute to the understanding of current issues of prison labor, contextualizing how neoliberal capitalism promotes policies that result in mass incarceration; the nature of prison labor; its consequent precarization and the contradictions found in the implementation of the project developed at the Federal University of Espírito Santo, aiming to understand the institutional role in the resocialization and social reintegration of these individuals. In this regard, the questions and contradictions do not aim to exhaust the subject, but rather highlight the importance of discussing the theme of prison labor and its relationship with the social reintegration of these individuals in deprivation of liberty.
