Resumo: The study here performed has as its goal both to entify those challenges met by individuais a. and the ways they have found to cope wi th such challenges, Based on those premisest a model is devised to guide nursing practice i n the h e 1 p of f er ed s u c h i n d i v i d ua 1 s . 11 is an exploratory study carried. ou.t at a teaching hospital in the city of Florianópolis. The sample was made up by 4 5 adult patients, of which 30 hospitali zed and 15 outpatients. Data were collected through the semi~structured interview technique, recorded on tape and afterwards transcribed . Data were subrnitted to gualita tive analysis, with identification of categoriest sub-categori es, and properties, the freguencv of the latter being regístered. Results showed the patients to face different kinds of challenges as a result of their chronica], health condition, such as : "To ha ve to follow trea tmen t regimens " , which includes to be on a diet, to take medicinet to restt and to exercise; "To deal with physical disconíort", such as pain, iatiguet dyspnea, sleeping pattern alteration, dizziness among others; "Seeking to know his/her disease", as expressed by the interviewed patients in the sense of willing to know or f inding impor te* nt the ir hecil th problem. The abo ve three challenges, on account of their conunon characteristic of adding something more to the life of that individual chronically ill, were denominated "NEW TASKS".
