Resumo: This dissertation aims to investigate how the language of João Guimarães Rosa represents cultural aspects through three characters of the novel "Buriti" wich are Gualberto Gaspar, Iô Liodoro and chief Zequiel belonging to the volume of Noites do Sertão, form Corpo de Baile(1956). The research was justified on the basis of the lack of studies on these three characters. Firstly it discuss the aesthetic-literary project author then discussed the plot in its formal aspects narrative, trying to understand how the writer works and the narrative focus in this work, as well as the configuration of space and the cultural events. It was made a brief account about the social and historical context. Finally, it was investigated the Buriti Bom farm and its inhabitants, especially the three characters mentioned. It was observed that the representation in this novel follows three levels of cultural development: in Gualberto performance is superficial in Liodoro indurate as tradition and chief Zequiel have a cultural melting pot, which highlights the confusion of the issues that the author proceeds to to represent Brazil in the hinterlands, summarizing cultural traits related to the scope and drawing a critical portrait of the country
