Resumo: The Courant condition is widely used in hydraulic transient calculations to guarantee stability to the calculation method. However, for an implicit and iterative calculation, this influence can be negligible. In this work, we calculated the roughness in two water distribution networks previously established in two ways: respecting and not respecting the Courant condition, in order to verify its impact. These networks have different characteristics and sizes so the impact caused by these changes in the final result of the simulation can be evaluated. For this, we use a hydraulic transient calculation software using Transient Inverse Method and Genetic Algorithm (AG) in its real configuration for optimization. The characteristics of the genetic algorithm, such as mutation, elitism and crossover, are defined through tests in a smaller version and with fewer iterations of the software used for the final roughness calculation. The result of the implicit process is compared with an observed roughness value, in order to determine the efficiency of the method based on the comparison of the objective function. The roughness obtained is also used for calculating new hydraulic heads and flow rates in both permanent and transient regimes. These values are also compared to heads and flows previously calculated with the observed values of roughness.
