both poets also produced advances in terms of the representation of women, as can be seen in the string books A força do amor (The love’s power, by Leandro Barros) and Romance do pavão misterioso (Novel of the mysterious peacock, by Camelo Rezende), mirroring a new model of woman who was being established with modernity. This study is developed through a qualitative approach and bibliographic and documentary research, using Discourse Analysis as a research tool. For the constitution of the corpus of analysis, several string books were selected, some of them very rare, which are part of the collections of the Casa de Rui Barbosa Foundation, of Maria Alice Amorim’s collection of string books and of Amadeu Amaral Library of the National Center of Folklore and Popular Culture. The analysis of this corpus had as theoretical support works that reflect on popular literature, especially string books, and on works in the field of Sociology, History and Education. Among the main theorists we resorted to, it is worth mentioning the names of Brandão (2020), Burke (2010), Ciavatta (2009), Galvão (2000), Hobsbawm (1988) and Le Goff (2003). Some works by these and other authors were essential for this study, which, we believe, may lead to a deeper understanding of how women were portrayed on the string books published from 1900 to 1950, in addition to contributing to reaffirm the importance of insertion string books in the training processes and, consequently, for the elaboration of policies that point to the insertion of the popular literature in the school curriculum. |
