Our study presents a functional analysis of cognition verbs saber, pensar, considerar, suponer, entender, encontrar, imaginar e sospechar in their evidential deictic use seeking to elucidate the grammatical features that specify the different subtypes of evidentiality conveyed by these verbs. This aim derives from the observation already pointed out by Saeger (2007) that cognition verbs in the expression of evidentiality present a greater structural complexity than that observed in their epistemic uses. In our study, we sought to investigate how this complexity takes place, from the analysis of eight cognition verbs and different grammatical aspects that characterize the evidential uses of these verbs. In addition, we also seek to show the productivity of these forms as means of expression of evidentiality and we strive to relate the evidential uses of cognition verbs to the notions of (inter)subjectivity and reliability (terms related to "evidentiality"), from the consideration of aspects of the context, focusing on its extralinguistic dimension. We undertook the analysis from a reference corpus, Corpus del Español del Siglo XXI (CORPES XXI). For qualitative analysis, we based on Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG) (HENGEVELD; MACKENZIE, 2008). We support the discussion based on quantitative analysis, carried out using the statistical program SPSS (Statistical Package of Social Sciences). The adequacy of the GDF model comes from the fact that the evidential subtypes and the different modalities can be analyzed in terms of layers, which allows us to better visualize the evidential behavior of cognition verbs and also validate their evidential function. The analysis showed us that cognition verbs are quite productive as evidential markers and they behave differently in terms of evidential values. The data also pointed to a complexity in the contexts of the evidential uses of the cognition verbs analyzed, in view (i) of the interaction of these verbs with different modifiers (especially those that act at the Representational Level) and with modalities under their scope, (ii) of the occurrence of these evidential uses in varied syntactic contexts and more complex structures, such as subordinate and coordinates clauses. From the intersection of the evidential uses of cognition verbs with the contextual aspects analyzed, we found that these forms of expression of evidentiality behave differently regarding the relationship with (inter)subjectivity and reliability effect. The verbs sospechar and imaginar proved to be more subjective and an unlikely choice to express a reliability effect. On the other hand, the verb saber was strongly related to ‘intersubjectivity’ and reliability effect. In this regard, our study points out ways for a systematization of coercion between context and grammar in the expression of evidentiality, to the extent that it sketches the impact of the context on grammatical choices in the evidential uses of cognition verbs and their relationship with (inter)subjectivity and reliability effect. |
