Resumo: This research is part of the context of the expansion and internalization of higher education that occurred with great intensity in the period from 2003 to 2014 in Brazil. This phenomenon enabled a greater number of students from popular classes to enter higher education, be it public or private. However, the policies and actions that encouraged the entry of these students were not given the same emphasis on permanence and success, resulting in high rates of dropout and retention. In this sense, this work intends to investigate, describe and analyze the school life trajectory and the strategies of schooling that allowed the permanence and success of students who, despite unfavorable socioeconomic conditions, were able to enter higher education. As an empirical field of investigation, two Federal Institutions of Higher Education (IFES) were chosen, located in the municipality of Crateús, in the state of Ceará. The parameters of analysis started from the theoretical contributions of the sociology of education, with emphasis on the studies of Pierre Bourdieu and Bernard Lahire. It is a qualitative research, using as data collection technique the in-depth interview with the objective of constructing sociological portraits and direct observation. From the elaboration of seven sociological portraits, it was possible to perceive the variation of dispositions and social practices that accompany the school routes of students coming from popular layers.
