Resumo: Violence by intimate partner (IPV) perpetrated by men appears on a patriarchal sociocultural scenario in which both men and women attack one another, however, men have caused lethal lesions more often. There is lack of study of factors related to the aggressor. It was searched and analyzed associated factors to impulsiveness and to drug use amongst men who were IPV authors in Ceará State. This sectional and exploratory study is approved under the number CAAE 57787316.1.0000.5038 it was carried out with 152 men accused of IPV who were arrested in the House of Provisional Deprivation of Liberty (Casa de Privação Provisória de Liberdade) facing a judicial process in Family and Domestic Violence Tribunal in Fortaleza City, Ceará State, from August 1st to November 30th in 2016. Data was collected through quiz compounded by four blocs: sociodemographic data, impulsiveness, alcohol and other drugs violence background. It was analyzed by IBM SPSS STATISTICS® 23.1, using finite population. It was calculated prevalence with CI 95%. In the logistic regression model with multiple variables it was included variables with p ≤ 20%. High prevalence of individuals highly impulsive (40.9%). Brown men (67.1%), age range 31-45 years (45.4%), stable union (88.2%), low educational level (52.0%) and low socioeconomic level (96.7%), men who suffered violence (82.2%) specifically physical violence (91.2%), witnessed domestic violence while children or adolescents (53.9%) men who committed other crimes besides domestic violence (68.7%). High alcohol prevalence use (82.9%), other drug use in the last three months (52.6% cigaretts and 38.2% illegal drugs) and high use of crack cocaine weekly or daily (60.3%). Factors associated to impulsiveness are low educational level (OR= 3.02, CI 95%= 1.19 – 7.69), jealousy self affirmation (OR= 2.42, CI 95%= 1.10 – 5.36), other ilegal drug use in the last three months before research (OR= 2.83, CI 95%= 1.33 – 6.01) and not the first time to attack the wife (OR= 2.72, CI 95%= 1.18 – 6.22); Factors associated to alcohol risky birth zone (OR= 6.52, CI 95%= 2.49 – 17.04), tobacco risky use (OR=7.94, CI 95%= 3.21 – 19.61), jealousy self affirmation (OR=2.66, CI 95%= 1.19 – 5.94) previous married or stable union (OR=2.64, CI 95%= 1.16 – 6.02). Factors associated to drug risky use in the last three years are declared race (OR= 4.45, CI 95%= 1.71 – 11.56), birth zone (OR= 2.62, CI 95%= 1.14 – 6.02), having one or two children (OR= 2.28, CI 95%= 1.02 – 5.10), use or previous use of gunfire (OR= 2.88, CI 95%=1.08 – 7.65) and not the first time to attack woman (OR= 4.03, CI 95%= 1.65 – 9.85). Before the outcomes, it was concluded that deficit of information about men who practice IPV limits the effectiveness of actions that aim at that phenomenon prevention.
