Resumo: The current work intends to investigate the representation of the condition of childhood in the narratives of Pernambuco writer Marcelino Freire, considering violence as one of the identifying traits of his theme. Freire's narratives, inserted in the movement of writers of the 90 generation, carry strong grooves of a childhood torn by violence and child characters acting on a space that reflects the tensions and transformations of everyday life unveiled by the author. For a more accurate analysis of such a theme, the short stories "Maracabul", "My last Christmas", "Friend of the King" and "Balé" were selected for the corpus of this research. The reason for this cut in Marcelino Freire's fictional production lies in the fact that these stories show how the writer relates childhood and space, representing an unacceptable reality from an ethical or political point of view. These pieces of work prioritizes the verification of the aspects that impel the idea of deconstruction of the sense of idyllic childhood. To think about issues related to childhood, it is necessary to visit contexts and underline historical moments. In this way, some perspectives and speeches were taken into accountin order to help understand this theme. Jacqueline Held (1980), Philippe Ariès (1981), Walter Benjamin (1985), Antonio Candido (1989), Chombart de Lauwe (1991), Guacira Lopes Louro (2010), Gilbert Durand (2012) and Pierre Bourdieu were some of the representative authors for this study. It is also important to emphasize the relevance of the Foucaultian studies in the approach to violence. The methodological procedures, then, comprise the reading and detailed analysis of some of the pieces of work of Marcelino Freire, followed by a critical-reflective reading of the chosen theoretical framework and the author's critical fortune, steps to which the analysis of the theme in the selected literary corpus is added.
