Resumo: |
Founded in Brazil around 1880, realism was the literary aesthetic that advocated a reflection of social contradictions, a more truthful description of human facts, a document of the traditions of an era. This is what is observed, for example, in the design and reception of this movement, based on the study of Brazilian literature manuals, newspapers, articles and prefaces published by authors of the time. However, only to think that the Brazilian intellectual elite, saturated with onirism, nationalisms and romantic idealisms, took advantage of the positivist and scientist spirit that was already in vogue in Europe - with its novels based on detailed description, in individuals as such we found in society and the extinction of the happy end - adopted this whole project and spread it in Brazil, obtaining in consequence acceptance and success, would be, at the very least, simplistic and flawed. However, this is often the understanding one has, once the manuals, in general, observe just the contrast of characteristics among aesthetics and the emphasis on novels that are considered milestones of the beginning of a new movement and the main writers. This is what we realize in some materials that consider the works “Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas”, by Machado de Assis, and “O mulato”, by Aluízio Azevedo, published in 1881, as “inaugurators” of Brazilian realism. Thus, in order to set a new vision, the above-mentioned novels will be analyzed, as well as “O Ateneu” by Raul Pompeia, in order to present, from the study of literary works, another configuration of realism in Brazil. |
