Resumo: Brazilian red propolis consists of a resinous mixture produced by Apis melífera bees, which since 2007 It is classified as the 13° type of propolis characteristic of Brazil. In the recent years it has been evaluated their applications in the treatment of joint diseases, their effects on biochemical parameters used as indicators for the appointment of biological activities and possible toxic effects arising from your intake. The present work aimed to analyze the blood parameters of normal individuals and with osteoarthrosis regarding possible toxicities from the oral use of ethanol extract of red propolis. A hematological biochemical assay, double-blind, randomized and placebo controlled was performed (UFAL Research Ethics Committee, registration number: 2.059.400). 42 individuals participated in this study, who were administered with 1 mL of propolis extract or placebo, daily, for 30 days. During this period and 30 days after the suspension of propolis extract, they were analysed the serum concentrations of Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH), C-Reactive Protein (CRP), biochemical profiles of liver, kidney, lipid, blood glucose and complete blood count. From the biochemical analyzes, it was found that the results in all the evaluated profiles were predominantly available within their respective normal limits, It has been demonstrated that administration of propolis extract did not result in changes in the biochemical profiles of liver function, kidney, blood glucose and serum LDH concentrations, which indicated the absence of cytotoxicities. Futhermore, decreases in serum CRP levels were observed, which indicated anti-inflammatory actions of red propolis, and also decreases in total cholesterol and LDL fraction, in parallel with the constancy of HDL levels. The complete blood count analyzes did not indicate variations outside the normal range of erythrocytic parameters or platelet counts, been observed slight increases in total leukocytes counts. The results of the volunteers with a diagnosis of osteoarthrosis showed the same pattern observed in normal patients, also showing evidence of beneficial actions and safety in the application of red propolis in cases of joint diseases. It was concluded that the administration of the ethanol extract of red propolis did not cause toxicities on neither of the profiles or groups of volunteers evaluated in this work.
