Resumo: The aim of this work is to characterize the mechanical and tribological properties of AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel submitted to N+ ion implantation and Nitrogen plasma immersion ion implantation (PI3). The ion implantation conditions were to obtain a plateau distribution of N íons in atomic concentrations of up to 27. The PI3 nitretation were performed at temperatures up to 400ºC for 4 h. The samples were characterized by q-2q X-ray diffraction in Bragg-Bretano condition, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy and optical microscopy. The hardness and elastic modulus were obtain by using the nanoindentation technique. The tribological properties were measured by a linear reciprocating tribometer, with spheres of 100Cr6 and WC(Co), with loads up to 12 N. The results compare the mechanical properties of ion implanted samples with those submitted to PI3. The hardness of the highest ion implanted dose (27) is equivalent to the sample nitrided by PI3 at 387C for 4 hs. The wear rate of the ion implanted samples increases with dose. For the PI3 samples, the wear rate decreases with increasing time and temperature of the nitriding process.
