The main objective of this study is to define an adequate and applicable approach and strategy to the ecological planning of Cascavel, in the West region of Paraná. Cascavel is located in the devider of the river basins: Piriquí river basin, Iguaçú river basin, and Paraná river basin. Based on the environmental planning, the purpose is to analyze how the open spaces system in Cascavel can be environmentally enhanced and how it can contribite to these river basins drainage. In this way, the ecological planning approaches are presented; an overview of the occupation process of Cascavel and how the legislation, throughout the years, guaranteed that the existent open spaces were preserved. The method of analysis of this case study is developed according to the methodology presented by Ndubisi (2002) by which the ecological planning approach identified as the best applied to the case is Green Infrastructure. From this, the guidelines presented on the paper on the preservation and qualification of the environmental system of the city of Cascavel were structured.
