Resumo: Orthodontic movement moves together the alveolar bone and periodontal ligament. The bone formation along the path of tooth movement comprises a form of recovery of the atrophic alveolar ridge, preparing an appropriate site for installation of implants and prosthetic rehabilitation. This prospective study evaluated the dimensions of the newly formed alveolar bone, and the integrity of the proximal crest of the moved teeth. Also was tested the correlation between the cervical root diameter and average width of the proximal ridges of the moved teeth and the widths of newly formed alveolar bone. Fourteen sites of atrophic alveolar ridge of 9 adult patients were recorded before and after orthodontic movement in order to evaluate the bone formation using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The initial and final dimensions of the bone formation in height and width as the tooth diameter and the diameter of the proximal crests were measured in mm using the software i-CATVision. The average transverse dimension of the newly formed bone was 6.97 mm. The alveolar proximal crests had an average resorption of 1.65 mm and 1.24 mm, respectively, the opposite crest and the adjacent crest to the receptor site of implant. There was no significant correlation between the tooth average diameter and the width of newly formed bone (r = - 0.13), while the width of the opposite crest to the movement represented a good predictor of the width estimated to be formed. (r = 0.92).
