Resumo: Herbicides aminocyclopyrachlor and indaziflam are two new molecules still in the development phase for sugar cane culture in Brazil. Little information on these weed killers is extant for Brazilian conditions. Current research investigated the behavior of aminocyclopyrachlor and indaziflam in soil within tropical conditions. Tests were first conducted to select the most suitable bioindicator species so that the activity of these herbicides could be monitored in the soil. Beetroot and soybean were the most sensitive species to the two herbicides. The persistence of biological activity of aminocyclopyrachlor and indaziflam was assessed by previously selected biomarkers. Aminocyclopyrachlor persisted longer than 150 days. In highly clayey soil the herbicide´s persistence was lower than in clayey sandy texture, probably due to higher contents of clay and organic carbon. Indaziflam was highly persistent in the soils under analysis. In fact, there was complete inhibition of the development of biomarkers even after 150 days of application. Aminocyclopyrachlor had a greater potential for contamination of surface water than indaziflam when leaching is taken into account. Rainfall affects herbicide leaching. Aminocyclopyrachlor increases mobility when applied to clayey sandy textured soil, whereas there was no difference between contrasting textures soils in the case of indaziflam. Applying aminocyclopyrachlor and indaziflam directly into the soil proved to be efficient in the control of Ipomoea grandifolia and Euphorbia heterophylla. When the herbicides are applied on a straw layer of 10 ton ha-1cane sugar, rainfall is essential to promote percolation of the herbicides into the soil and provide effective weed control.
