Resumo: Recent studies have shown evidence of the close relationship between childhood obesity and the early development of various diseases. This study aimed to identify factors associated with poor diet and nutritional status of schoolchildren. Crosssectional study in public schools in Maringa (PR), through interviews with heads of students enrolled from 1st to 5th grade. Data were collected through interviews in schools. Of the 397 made, it was found that 58.2% of parents were overweight, while 38.8% had children. The dietary intake of children was 60.2% of low or medium quality. The child's nutritional diagnosis was associated with the fact that she does not live with his father and with the number of household members, and the quality of food consumption with the completion of morning coffee, physical activity, leisure activity with parents and the situation of children ask their parents to buy certain foods. The largest number of associations between the consumption of unhealthy foods was with the marital status of the parents. All variables showed at least an association with a type of vegetable or fruit. The results indicate alarming rates of overweight among school, high consumption of unhealthy foods and low quality food. The lack of significant association between variables show that the environmental and socioeconomic factors are present, however, are not unique characteristics of children with overweight, but also of normal weight.
