: In this dissertation we socialize the research results of a survey that had as its subject the ecclesiastical institution called "lajes", which organizes popular movements and programmes which provide popular education in the outskirts of Andradina - SP, in the eighties, under strong influence of the discursive matrices of the Teologia da Libertação discursive sources and of a Marxist "Gramscist". Our main goal was the understanding of popular struggles process, emphasizing the possible causes that led to their decline in Andradina, through collection and analysis of documents produced by IAJES in the decades from 1970 to 1990. As results we have: a) The regional history reproduces the system contradictions and reveals some concrete conditions of its emergency, taking into account an exploitation and struggle past and a "present" of an intense authoritarianism; b) The trajectory of IAJES has incoherent and contradictory histories, characteristic of what's popular, always oscillating among resistance and conformity. c) The crisis of the movements and the own institution, occurred in the nineties, can be understood by the conscious performance of the individuais and their options within the religious and political fields of that scenario. d) The reference of Theology discursive sources insert the subjects in a pole of the religion field and they opt for the insertion of their actions in the political field as well, with the foundation of the Municipal Directory of Party of the Workers in the early eighties, in a local level. e) These histories and trajectories reveal, finally, the huge potential of the subjects studied here, the social strength constituted by ordinary men and women who opted, or not, for adhering to the games, imposed by the fields they acted in. It's concluded, then, that such histories and trajectories reveal subjects that effectively contributed to real changes in Brazilian historical process, such as the emergency and consolidation of democratic values existing in our society, a still young Brazilian democracy.
