Resumo: Baby corn consists of non-fertilized corn ears. Since no specific commercial cultivar exists in Brazil for the production of baby corn, sweet corn or popcorn has been used instead. Current experiment analyzes the combinatory capacities of popcorn strains and hybrids characterized for baby corn production, and identifies promising simple hybrids. Two diallel crossings were undertaken. Whereas the first complete diallel crossing yielded 36 simple hybrids from "Zélia", "CMS 42", "CMS 43", "UEM M2", "Zaeli" and "IAC 112" strains, the second partial diallel crossing yielded 25 simple hybrids from the crossings of five strains from genotype "Zaeli" with five strains from modified simple hybrid "IAC 112". Diameter, length, mass and yield of corn ears with and without husks were evaluated. Results show that the strains from "Zaeli" and "CMS 42" in diallel 1 may be recommended in projects featuring higher hybrids with greater corn ear yields without husks. Strains 1 and 5 of Group 1 "Zaeli" and strains 3 and 5 of Group II - "IAC 112" in diallel 2 may be suggested for recombination within each group and for the formation of two synthetic populations for recurring selection. They may also be recommended in projects featuring higher hybrids to increase ear yield without husk. No strain hybrid in the two diallels showed satisfactory mean ear yield without husk that may be recommended immediately for commercial use.
