Resumo: About 29.9 million individuals live in rural areas, with an estimated 8.1 million households, representing 16% of the total Brazilian population. However, of the total value residing in rural locations, only 27.2% of the households have access to waste collection service. And among the solid residues found in rural areas, are included besides the domestic waste, the residues coming from rural activities. The objective of this work was to identify and evaluate the management of residues generated in the rural environment, including empty agrochemical packaging. For this, a questionnaire was applied with farmers from two communities in the rural area of a small municipality, in order to answer specific questions about the study. With the quotations, 96.1% of the respondents generated food rest, 85.7% paper and cardboard, 83.1% leaves and branches, 85.7% plastic, 2.6% glass, 1.3% metal and 42.8% empty containers. In the community of Oitizeiro 92.6% and 94% in Gameleira, the waste is destined for public collection, and 14.8% and 26%, respectively, cite the practice of burning. It was observed that: there is no segregation of the waste at source, and often are not suitably packed. In Gameleira it was mentioned that 100% of the empty containers of agrochemicals are returned at collection points, and in Oitizeiro 72.2%. Realizing that, in the rural communities studied, there is no adequate management of solid waste, which consists of minimizing, collecting, transporting and disposing of the environment. Residents of rural areas are seeking solutions that only aim to eliminate waste, without environmental concern.
