Background: Osteoporosis and periodontal disease represent a serious public health problem, providing significant increases in morbidity and mortality in addition to public spending. Population-based studies are still needed for better definition and planning of measures to control these two diseases of major impact on health. This intervention study aims to determine whether osteoporosis is associated with periodontitis recurrence after therapy in a group of postmenopausal women, accompanied by four months after periodontal treatment non-surgical, aged over 50 years, invited the Center Research and Assistance in Human Reproduction (CEPARH) and the Municipal Center of Diagnostic Imaging (CMDI) - Feira de Santana-BA to assess and treat dental Clinic Extension Department of Oral Diagnosis I Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana-BA . Objective: Check in a period of four months, the influence of osteoporosis on periodontal status in post menopausal women undergoing periodontal therapy, to analyze the influence of osteoporosis on periodontitis recurrence after four months of periodontal therapy and describe the periodontal condition, oral hygiene and of tooth loss in the first four months after periodontal therapy. Methods: This dissertation is presented in the form of two articles entitled "Article 01 - Osteoporosis, periodontitis and tooth loss in Brazilian women post-menopause" and "Article 02 - Effect of periodontal therapy on osteoporosis in postmenopausal women: preliminary results. It is part of the "Osteoporosis and periodontal disease in post menopausal women" of Research, Integrated Practice and Multidisciplinary Research - NUPPIIM. Results: As postmenopausal women with osteoporosis showed 18% higher risk of having periodontal disease (PR = 1.18, CI 95% 0,51-2,72, p = 0.503). When adjusted for age and BMI, the risk increased by 10% (PR = 1.28, CI 95% 0,53-3,05, p = 0.580), although with no statistical significance. Conclusion: Preliminary results of this study point to a possible influence of osteoporosis on periodontal status of individuals or non-surgical periodontal treatment and the decrease in the number of teeth. |
