Resumo: Introduction: Low birth weight (LBW) is a serious public health problem, mainly by increasing infant mortality. That pregnancy outcome has been associated with periodontal disease since 1996 when Offenbacher and his colleagues conducted the first research on the topic. The relationship between infection of periodontal tissues during pregnancy and low birth weight is still a controversial topic in the literature. For this reason, population-based studies are needed to increase the body of evidence on this issue. Objective: This research proposes to determine whether maternal periodontitis is associated with low birth weight. Method: This thesis presented as a paper titled "Effects between Maternal Periodontitis and Low Birth Weight –a case-control study" is the product of a survey conducted in the municipalities of Juazeiro-BA and Petrolina-PE. The study included951motherswho sought care in public hospitals of the cities mentioned above. Results: We observed that the frequency of periodontitis among children of mothers with low birth weight (<2500g) was 16.4%, while for women with children weighing ≥ 2500g this measure was approximately 17.4%. There was no association between periodontitis and LBW (ORUNADJUSTED=0.92,95%CI [0.63-1.35]). After proper treatment of confounders maternal age, body mass index before pregnancy, primiparity, hypertension, number of pre-natal care, smoking during pregnancy and maternal education there was a slight
