Resumo: Modern life has brought many advances in several areas of knowledge, culture, health and work for humanity. However, coupled with technological advances typical of modern societies, a disturbing phenomenon has emerged, along with all these changes the appearance of high levels of psychological illnesses, especially the Common Mental Disorders (CMD), becomes a disease of concern. Coupled with the phenomenon described above, there is the appreciation and importance of leisure to the quality of life and health. This research was conducted in the municipality of Feira de Santana, BA, sought to investigate whether leisure activities may be protective factors for mental health workers are associated with low prevalence of CMD in this population. This is an epidemiological cross-sectional study population included a sample selected by random procedure aged 15 years or older living in the city of Feira de Santana-BA. We investigated 4167 individuals in the original study. Since 2819 (67.6%) women and 1351 (32.4%) men. Of these, 1,557 (37.3%) were workers, and 851 (54.7%) women and 706 (45.3%) men. The study population is therefore constituted by workers in 1557. Analysis was exploratory and descriptive, prevalence rates, prevalence ratios, chi-square test considering a confidence interval (CI = 95%) and p-value ≤ 0.05. It was observed that 64.9% of workers did not perform physical activity in leisure time. The association was statistically significant between the lack of leisure and the presence of TMC, not having attended school, sex, marital status and income below minimum wage. The study revealed the existence of social and economic inequalities for not carrying out activities in leisure time, pointing to the need for equitable service organization that meets the population of workers in their realities.
