The purpose of this dissertation isto analyze the function of the memory in the tales O Avô e o rio, O sorriso da estrela, O vôo dos anjos, In memoriam, Jaú dos bois e O desterro dos mortos by writer Aleilton Fonseca, one of the exponents of baiana literature on the contemporary scene. We verified the conceptions of memory present in the tales mentioned in the construction of the narrator's particular memories, butalso the collectiveones, because they constitute the feeling of identity and in heritance among people belonging to thes ame family group. Besides that, we analyzed the relations between the memory and the phasesof life, such as childhood and old age, as well as the presence of death and guilt, in order tounder stand the tales of the author. The bibliographic alanalysisis base Don the ories of psychology, philosophy and sociology, by the studies of Michael Pollak (1992), Jacques Le Goff (2013), Ecléa Bosi (2015), Beatriz Sarlo (2007), Santo Agostinho (2011), Sigmund Freud (1990), Philippe Ariès (1981, 2003 and 2014) and others, considering AL so the studies about the tale and the narrator, as proposed by Walter Benjamin (1987)and Ligia Chiappini Moraes Leite (2002).
