Resumo: |
Brazil ranks number two in the list of countries with cases of leprosy in the world. The Ministry of Health measures it is using a control parameter of 1 case of leprosy for every 10 thousand inhabitants. The objective of the present study was to conduct a data analysis of the registered cases in the town of Turvo-PR between 1982 and 2016. During this period, 193 cases were reported. Despite 90% of the patients being cured, 60 cases (31%) still presented grade II of physical disabilities. The treatment with polychemotherapy has shown to be efficient and a highly effective cure. However, it is the early stage diagnosis that results in a better prognosis to reduce the occurrence of physical disabilities. In this regard, the review of the contacts of the patients is extremely important in order to the early detection of new cases, despite of that, 49 patients who started the treatment did not have any records of the evaluation of their contacts. The presence of medium endemicity was the most prevalent in the town of Turvo, in the countryside of Parana, making leprosy a serious public health problem, being the early diagnosis the greatest challenge to eradicate the disease. |
