Resumo: |
HPV is an important etiologic factor of cervical cancer and may contribute to the appearance of anogenital, penile and oropharyngeal cancer. Sexual behavior directly influences the individual's risk of developing an STI. There are data from several countries on the prevalence of HPV in the oral mucosa, but in Brazil data are scarce. Objective: To analyze the prevalence of HPV in the oral mucosa of school-age adolescents and young adults and correlate it with their lifestyle, sexual behavior and socioeconomic conditions. Method: this is a cross-sectional observational study, where saliva samples from healthy adolescents and adults were collected, as well as socioeconomic and sexual behavior data. Results: Of the 107 individuals, 91.46% of adults and 36% of adolescents showed risk behavior. 2.8% of participants were HPV-positive. Conclusion: The results reveal that, despite a low prevalence of HPV in the oral mucosa, individuals present risky sexual behavior, which may lead to possible STIs in the future and/or other diseases such as cancer. Prevention of STIs must imply an effective approach to sex education, safe sex behavior and encouragement of vaccination. |
