Resumo: When educational institutions and spaces are called upon to compose and heat up the production of innovation, thinking about economic and social development, and solutions to problems that impact well-being and social life, it is also important that Information Science (IS) understand the intricacies that are the reason for the innovation concept, which explain where to understand innovation in the IS area. This research does not seek to find a standardized concept, nor does it attempt to standardize it, but the proposal is to shed light on innovation according to the conceptual associations it plays in IS, the issues associated with innovation over the years of publications in the area. The methodological theory of Systemic-Functional Grammar is used as a method, where the grammar itself is used as an informational system, and scientific productions, which form the scientific textual corpus, are the fundamental substance for the informational capture regarding ideas and of what is ignited as epistemological issues in innovation since the construction of the discipline (1953). Metrics of natural language processing (PLN) were applied to the scientific textual corpus, such as textual mining and semantic analysis, using a similarity, modularity and eigenvector centrality coefficient (TextRank). As a result, we see that in the 1980s, innovation at IS started with topics such as Social Development, Organizational Performance and Information, Knowledge and Technology. In the 1990s, Services and Products became a new reading of innovation, and from the 2000s onwards, Knowledge Management started to be evoked to deal with innovation. Finally, it was found that in the ideational field of IS, innovation is treated much more as a participant object than as a procedural movement, this because, through the data analysis, showed that CI has little maturity regarding the verbal and action paradigm that is required to understand innovation. The lack of prominence in thinking about applied research, development of artifacts in problem solutions reveals little real baggage in the area in indicating a more intimate, refined construction, proper to what makes up the concept of innovation.
