Although the American actress Louise Brooks (1906-1985) is known for the roles she played in films in Germany – especially Pandora’s Box (G. W. Pabst, 1929) –, in the second half of the 1920s (1926-1930) her name was very present in the Brazilian press as a rising star. Her films produced in Hollywood and Beauty Prize (Augusto Genina, 1930), produced in France, toured the exhibition circuit of Brazilian theaters – mainly in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, where cinema was more present in the collective imaginary. The objective of the research is to analyze the discourse published in the Brazilian press about “modern women” and about the actress Louise Brooks and to identify the dialogues between her characters and the female spectators of Brazil during the First Republic.
