Resumo: INTRODUCTION: Human labor is considered a potential media element to social integration, especially in people's lives and influencing the way of live, sicken and die. Environmental factors related to labour activity can trigger overload favoring the development of SB. OBJECTIVE: Investigate the environmental factors associated with the three components of the Burnout syndrome in caregivers of the elderly with alzheimer's disease. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study, analytical, quantitative approach, carried out in twenty-four municipalities belonging to 6th GRS-Patos/PB. The sample comprised 162 caregivers. For data collection applied a questionnaire structured in three parts: the first consisted of demographic data of the caregiver, the second assessed the workload through the Brazilian version of the scale Zarit Burden Interview ¿ EZBI and the third Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Data collection was carried out with the participation of the Community Health Agent to locate caregivers collaborating with its realization. Statistical procedures were used for the descriptive analysis of the variables of the study. The qualitative variables were presented in terms of their absolute and relative values, the quantity in terms of central tendency and dispersion. The association between qualitative variables was verified by Qui-Square test. To evaluate the risk factors for the MBI domains using univariate and multiple logistic regression models. The significance level was 5%. RESULTS: Most caregivers were female (84%), with income of up to one minimum wage (45%), married (63%), without remuneration for being caregiver (87%) and developing another type of occupation (67%), the self-employed persons corresponded to 64%, showed some degree of kinship with the elderly (90%), represented primarily by their son (52.4%). In relation to Alzheimer disease elderly 64.2% of them were female, aged 70-80years (39.5%) and alzheimer´s intermediate phase disease (43.2%). It was verified the existence of burnout syndrome (BS) domains distributed at all levels, with average risk of 85.2%. There was association between variables of the study and the BS domains, with average level (p<0.05). The chance for the development of BS was evident in the results. With any level of caregiver overload presents chances of developing the BS domains. CONCLUSION: It is important to recognize these study contributions, insofar as they sought to meet and discuss the issues inherent in the physical and mental health of the caregiver, the knowledge about the SB and the identification of factors that predispose to the illness as process, work overload.
