Resumo: Violence has been a recurring theme within the school system, and understanding the issue of moral development within this context becomes important in thinking about actions that may contribute to the discussion of this context. Therefore, it is intended in this study to show the relationship between behaviors of school violence and the level of moral development of 10 high school students from a public school in Porto Alegre during the morning shift. This is a qualitative study of descriptive analysis, in which students' violence behaviors were observed and categorized in three types of violence according to Johan Galtung's theory, physical, structural and cultural violence. Levels of moral development were ranked according to participants' responses to Kohlberg's dilemma stories. It was found that 50% of the participants were at the preconventional level of moral development, which is the initial level, these participants practiced all three types of violence. On the other hand, the participants who remained at the post-conventional level, at a more advanced level, practiced less cultural violence, showing a better perception of the other. We conclude that providing a context of discussion on issues that permeate morality, in a mediated way have benefited students to develop at moral levels and thus constitute a step forward in reducing violence in school.
