Resumo: This is a biographical historical study of the life of Joseph Lutzenberger, comprising the historical period from 1889, when he was born, in Altöting, in German Bavaria, to 1951, the year of his death, already as a Brazilian citizen, in Porto Alegre (RS). The aim of this study is to analyze Lutzenberger’s assimilation process, using a biographical study as a basis, partially permeated by microhistory and Oral History. It contains an analytical description of Lutzenberger’s life in Germany and in Brazil. Information obtained in the autobiography, which begins in 1929, is taken as a basis for the period in the Old World, in which Lutzenberger tells his origins, the main passages of his childhood, his school, academic and military background, his professional and military experiences in the battlefields in France and Belgium during World War I (1914-1918). Germany is defeated, which triggers a series of events that determine his desire to immigrate. Upon his arrival in Brazil, already employed, he begins his process of assimilation and creation of a new identity as a foreigner in Rio Grande do Sul. At this stage of his life, it is possible to search “locally” for data in documents and oral reports about the time he lived and about his death in the Southern Hemisphere. The biographical analysis is complemented by a research into Lutzenberger’s “gaucho” reality (in Rio Grande do Sul). The study goes further into the analysis of this option and in the construction of his social networks, including his marriage to Emma Kroeff, who gives birth to his offspring from Rio Grande do Sul. Simultaneous to the children, his professional rise takes place, with emphasis on the main constructions in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Lutzenberger expanded his professional activity and became a teacher, a choice that coincided with the authoritarian shifts of the Estado Novo (“New State”) (1937) and Brazil’s entry into World War II (1942), events with harmful effects on the German-gaucho community, of which Lutzenberger is a member. The results of the study show the effective assimilation and adoption of the local culture by Lutzenberger in the context of Rio Grande do Sul society, evidenced in his social insertion, in his daily habits, in his professional and artistic productions
