Resumo: The Object Relations Technique (ORT)was developed by Phillipson in 1955 and reedited by Shaw in 2002, who proposed a specific 5-step categorization of the instrument. It was built from the Rorschach Technique and the Thematic Apperception Test, based on the object relations theory, proposed by Melanie Klein and William Fairbairn, consisting in 12 pictoricalcards and one blank, distributed in 3 series (A-B-C), and 4 relational settings (1 person – 2 people – 3 people – group). Considering the importance of instruments adaptation to the reality they are used, this study aimed to verify the ORT validity evidences. To this end, the present Doctoral Thesis was organized in three sections. The first is a theoretical discussion about theoretical and practical aspects of the ORT, focusing on its construction and the instrument’s application and correction. The second section is a description of the study that aims to evaluate the ORT reliability through intraobserver and between observer agreements. Three judges performed blind corrections of the ORT protocols from a 50 cases sample, constituted by people from the general population, drug addicts and inmates of the Central Prison of Porto Alegre. And, among these, 20 cases were reevaluated by two judges in a longer than a month range. There was an almost perfect agreement between evaluators and in the intraobserver corrections, considering the Kappa statistical method and the Landis and Koch interpretation in the items: subject and object, action, blockage or implementation of the portrayed actions, affects, defenses and stimulus variance. And the third section addresses a study which compares drug users (N=30), individuals with violent behavior history (N=40) and people from the general population (N=36) who responded to the ORT. According to the instrument categorization system, were analyzed the number of strings, the types of subjects and objects used in the narratives, actions used, as well as its implementation or blockage, affects and defenses and, ultimately, the stimulus variance. ANOVA statistics was used for multiple sample comparisons, applying the Tukey Test and Student-Newman-Keuls. It was verified that the ORT proved to be useful in the differentiation of the criteria groups evaluated. This thesis results contribute to a future adaptation of the test to the Brazilian reality, serving as a stimulus to this process.
