Resumo: |
Schistosomiasis is a trematode infection caused by Schistosoma mansoni. The parasitosis occurs mainly in northern Minas Gerais and northeastern States in Brazil. There has been a significative reduction in morbidity and prevalence of schistosomiasis in some areas. However, the parasitosis is still considered an infection that is expanding geographically. The first autochthonous case in Esteio, Rio Grande do Sul (RS) was diagnosed in 1997. Since that date, 28 individuals were found infected with S.mansoni and have been followed up by the Grupo de Parasitologia Biomédica at PUCRS. The objective of the present study was to investigate and update data indicating a possible interruption of transmission. Serum samples were collected from the individuals previously identified with the infection and from school-aged children at Vila Pedreira, Esteio. From children, urine samples were also collected and tested with the rapid test “point of care” for detection of cathodic circulating antigen (POC-CCA). Serum samples were examined by Western-blot (WB), with S.mansoni microsomal antigen (MAMA). 18 children were positive at POC-CCA test. None of the positive results with molecular methods were positive by Helmintex. Transmission interruption in Esteio may probably have occurred, but its certification needs a long-term monitoring as well as adjustment of best suited methods for this challenging task. |
