OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study is to assess the body composition and to associate it with the remission of comorbidities in morbidly obese people who undergone the Rouxen- Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted with patients that underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery in 2010 and 2011. Anthropometric, biochemical and body composition data were collected preoperatively and postoperatively at 12 months and 24 months. RESULTS: 49 individuals with an average age of 39.3 ± 13.0 years and were overweight by 51.7 ± 21.0 kg were included in the study. Metabolic syndrome was found in 79.6% of the individuals preoperatively. The group of women presented older age (p = 0.048), lower weight (= 0.48) and higher rates of insulin (p = 0.034) when compared to the group of men. The evaluation of the best cutoff point for the percentage of fat considering the remission of comorbidities at 12 months postoperatively resulted in a value below 34% (95% CI: 53.9% to 85.9%), while at 24 months postoperatively it is a value below 30.5% (95% CI: 42.7% to 85.4%). CONCLUSION: The remission of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hyperuricemia was associated with the reduction in the body fat percentage. |
