Resumo: |
This research aims to study the female character in the works Persuasion, by Jane Austen (1818), and Mistress (1875), by José de Alencar, with the main purpose of establishing similarities and differences between them based on the following question: are the secondary characters in these novels responsible for the narrative composition of the social space through which the protagonists move? The hypothesis is that the secondary female characters are constructed based on a fixed view of marriage, sometimes revealing them as commodities or mere social accessories. Because the survey of critical fortune has shown scarce studies, especially concerning secondary characters, our project seeks to examine this specific component, whose character is essential to the narrative. The research will be based on authors such as Watt (2019), Bakhtin (2019), Auerbach (2021), and Moretti (2009), who investigate the romance genre, and on Antonio Candido (2014), E. M. Forster (2002), Raquel Trentin Oliveira and Gisele Seeger (2022), for more specific reflections on the composition of the character. The methodology consists of a hypothetical-deductive approach, in a bibliographic review, aiming at the comparative analysis of the works |
