Resumo: The current study, entitled “Environmental crisis and the need for education and environmental awareness for social transformation”, has the main purpose of analyzing the efficacy of environmental education as an instrument in the search for the solution to the crisis that affects the environment, as well as examining the effectiveness of environmental education programs. The environmental issue largely depends on the issues of humanity. Mankind continues to exploit natural resources in a disharmonious way. The environmental issue, then, becomes a deadlock to be dealt with nowadays. The way mankind exploits natural resources must be reassessed. More than ever, sustainable mechanisms must be sought along with the creation of societies that receive education geared towards the need to preserve and protect the environment. Environmental education aims at developing actions and values that encourage social transformation, leading people to develop a perception of a sustainable world and environment, thus enabling a respectful interaction between mankind and the environment in which it inhabits. It is necessary to build a new worldview, to promote the education of a society and even its re-education, if necessary. Education also allows society to understand that in order to achieve a certain degree of quality of life it is necessary a protected and preserved environment. The current study was developed in an exploratory manner, through the bibliographic survey that contemplates the subject matter, the analysis of the relevant legislation about environmental protection and environmental education, and through a regional case study
