Resumo: This study is an attempt to offer a contribution towards the understanding of issues concerning contemporary aging, focusing the elderly people who live in São Paulo City. Among these issues lies the discussion about both the process of globalization and urbanization that has occurred in the modern times and the characterization of the profile and needs of these elderly people, as well as about institutional proposals that make use of artistic activities as a way of technical and methodological intervention in search of aging with quality of life. The study herein presented consists in a qualitative research based on the documentary analisys of paintings and written records made by reporters-observers in the PACTO-Permanent Program of Occupational Therapy and Artistic Compositions, in the year 2001. The study aims at reflection on this reality and proposals for aging with quality, on the basis of artistic production (paintings made by elderly people in studios) on the theme Daily Life in São Paulo City , and the elderly people´s verbalization on their experiences in the aging process. The analisys of the content of the painting works was complemented with data from the records of the elderly people´s verbalization and based on a conceptual field of interdisciplinary reference, theorectically and empiracally considering the interfaces of Occupational Therapy, Arts and Gerontology. The results of the data analysis process indicate that, for the elderly people, their consciousness and measurement of their own biological aging are allied to their consciousness of the reality that they experience, the maintaining of their affective relationship, solidarity, and care between aging people. The preservation of their autonomy and independence as well as of their family bonds, together with their participation in the city´s social-cultural events; and, in addition to that, the specialization of professionals in the Gerontology field who can organize proposals that are meant for assisting individuals in their aging process: all of these aspects are also indicated as essential ones for the aging with quality in large cities.
