Resumo: In São Paulo, in the late nineteenth century, there is a growth of the associative life indicated by the appearance of societies driven by different topics. Along with this, the press, which from the beginning of that same century, formed along with students from Law course an organic relationship, became, especially after 1890, the centre of growing attention of a very large number of social sectors whose cultural framework was not constituted from the academic environment. Connected to this support, for decades, the expression of a medium that shaped the literary practice in São Paulo, within the guidelines of the romantic movement, the literature also became object of the practice of those social sectors. Thus, this period is marked by transformations within the context of the literate culture that happened at that time, almost exclusively through advertising vehicles associated with the periodical press. This work aims at thinking how the literature, through the literary practice, gains specific meanings when inserted in this process of transformation of the literate culture, considering that the support on which it was held gave it a social and cultural meaning which, in our view, precedes the understanding of both literature and literary practice from aesthetic precepts. Such principles, established within the literary criticism, resulted in an analysis of the cultural processes in a canonical structure that composes a certain temporality of the history of literature, whose logic, especially regarding the period studied, did nothing but judge from the determination of the accusers, that is, of those social subjects, historically dated - sometimes one may forget - that in a cultural and aesthetic clash against the literature that originated from that expansion, they formed a movement of significant expression and repercussion not only for the culture of São Paulo, but also of Brazil, namely, Modernism. Therefore, considering these cultural processes, this work investigates how subjects inserted in that transformation of the literate culture give meaning to its literary practices, when they make use of them, analyzed from the discursive argument of the time, responsible for giving conceptual content to literature. To do so, it analyzes some periodic publication produced by dancing and recreational societies between 1890 and 1902 in the city of São Paulo, trying to understand how they constituted starting points to make sense of their literary practices above all because their publications used as subtitle the expression literary entities
